السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be with you.
اَهْلاًوَسَهْلاً (Ahlan wa sahlan)
My name is Hajjah Salmah Kassim and I first came to the University of Otago in February 1995 when I was studying for my Bachelor Degree in Education, majoring in English Literature. Later in 2004, I graduated with Masters of Education (Educational Sociology) from Science University of Malaysia. I am currently pursuing my doctoral degree at the University of Otago (Higher Education Development Centre).
In 2011 to 2013, I was appointed as a Diplomatic Officer @ Education Attaché at the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington, and one of my key roles was to provide pastoral care for all undergraduate and postgraduate students here in New Zealand. I enjoyed my time with students and with trust, we engaged in a very constructive manner for the benefits of all.
My other experiences include being a Senior Lecturer @ Teacher Trainer, and Head of Management and Services where I engaged with people from all walks of life. I enjoyed meeting people, hearing their stories and helping whenever and however I could. Now here in the University of Otago once again, I offer you my sincere friendship and a confidential listening ear. I promise to respect your faith and culture, and by the grace of Allah we will walk along this journey together.
With my experience of twenty over years being in a foreign land, leaving my daughter, husband and family while completing my bachelor degree has given me the privilege to understand your experience here in New Zealand. As a Muslim chaplain, I am committed to offer a confidential and non-judgmental space for you and know that someone cares for you.
If you need someone to talk to and just chat about anything, be it your study and other interests, you are most welcome to keep in touch via email or mobile and we can meet up. In shaa Allah.
جزاك اللهُ خيرًا (May Allah reward you with goodness).
