Primary school projects involve visits by us to schools, there are two broad categories that the visits fit into:
"Magic Shows"
We have a team of experienced students who visit schools to perform so called "magic shows" .
These are a chance to excite students about chemistry/science and show them some fun chemistry.
They normally include a "hands on" section and the team outlines the chemistry behind the demonstrations so they become a "show and tell" exercise rather than a performance.
Magic shows are quite often used as an initial visit to generate interest in pupils before the main type of project that we offer:
Teaching activities
One off visits to schools don't have a long term impact on pupils engagement in science. So we developed some simple "materials world" lessons based around the NZ curriculum that we can bring to a school and support the science programme that they run.
Since each school runs their science programme in a different way we end up tailoring these activities to fit in with a school. Typically we'll deliver 4 or 5 fortnightly lessons over a term. Although this project was originally intended for year 8 pupils we are happy to deliver materials world lessons to younger classes.
In addition to these activities we are also happy to arrange visits to our teaching labs
