Centre for Organic Geochemistry and Paleoclimate Studies

The Centre for Organic Geochemistry and Paleoclimate Studies (COrGePS) is an interdisciplinary research group gathering marine scientists, geologists and chemists.

The COrGePS group uses the information encoded in the organic matter preserved in sediments to study features of past climates, including sea surface temperatures, terrestrial plant distributions and wind patterns.

We aim at exploring the complex interplay between the biosphere, hydrosphere, land surface, atmosphere, and climate for various geological intervals and different timescales. Our group is especially interested in investigating past environmental records in the Southern Ocean, including offshore New Zealand and its Subantarctic Islands as well as around Antarctica.

COrGePS is a consortium between the Chemistry Department, the Department of Geology, and the Department of Marine Science.
