Jun Li freshly returned from the ANZBMS Conference in Queenstown.
Our very own Jun Li has returned from the recent ANZBMS Annual Scientific Meeting in Queenstown with this year's Roger Melick Young Investigator Award.
The honour is awarded annually by the Australasian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society to a member for their substantial contribution to a research paper presented at the meeting. To qualify the recipient must be working towards a higher degree and be the first author of the paper.
Mr Li is currently completing his PhD with the Christchurch Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering (CReaTE) Research Group attached to the University of Otago's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine.
In his doctoral studies he is investigating the surface design of 3D-printed titanium orthopaedic implants, optimising them for bone regeneration in and around the implant and to offer some antibacterial function.
Mr Li's wining paper explored using electrochemical anodization to fabricate highly ordered nanotubular structures on the surface of a titanium alloy (Ti6A14V) most commonly used for bone-interfacing orthopaedic implants. The study shows promise in solving the severe issues of implant failure by preventing infection and simultaneously promoting bone regeneration around implants.
Mr Li is supervised in his doctoral studies by Associate Professor Tim Woodfield and Professor Gary Hooper, who were co-authors on the paper along with Dr Isha Mutreja, Mr Seamus Tredinnick and Mr Alasdair Soja.
