Christchurch scientists call for mandatory genetic screenings for women diagnosed with breast cancer

Logan WalkerAssociate Professor Logan Walker and his research team are calling for mandatory genetic screenings of all women diagnosed with breast cancer.

"Our study suggests that there are a number of people who are particularly vulnerable and have a predisposition to developing cancer and we have the potential to identify these individuals and intervene and they can get tailored prevention," Associate Professor Walker says.

Groundbreaking treatment could prevent breast cancer without requiring mastectomy

Vanessa LattimoreDr Vanessa Lattimore has been awarded funding to develop a ground-breaking treatment to prevent breast cancer which could provide a simpler alternative to the surgical prevention - mastectomy.

For people who carry a gene variant their best shot at avoiding breast cancer is a double mastectomy. But Dr Lattimore is hoping to develop an alternative therapy.

"You could have an injection instead of surgery which could lower your risk down to that of the general population, so just as effective if not more effective than the current options," she says.
