Background
Cheryl originally trained as a medical practitioner and worked for almost a decade in general practice and emergency medicine, before retraining as a public health medicine specialist.
After completing the Diploma in Community Health in 1989, she began work as a public health registrar for the Primary Health Division of the Canterbury Area Health Board.
She combined management of rural district nursing and home care services, general practice liaison, and lecturing in public health at the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences until 1993, when she became a fulltime Lecturer at the School.
Cheryl also works four days a week as a public health physician in the Community and Public Health Division of the Canterbury District Health Board.Her duties there include acting as Medical Officer of Health for the West Coast.
