Specialist training in psychiatry in the central and top of the South Island is co-ordinated from Christchurch.
The Training Programme in Christchurch itself is integrated with the clinical services provided by Te Whatu Ora – Waitaha Canterbury and is focused around Trainees gaining the qualification of Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists ( FRANZCP ).
The Christchurch programme has up to 28 full time equivalent registrar posts located in a wide variety of service locations.
Satellite training experiences in Nelson are also available.

Posts are supervised by Consultant Psychiatrists appointed by the local Training Committee and approved by the RANZCP. The mainstay of the training programme is day to day apprenticeship in these clinical posts.
In the first year of training, Registrars work in general adult placements such as the Acute Adult Inpatient Unit and in Community Mental Health Teams. Thereafter there is more choice of clinical attachments, although some placements are mandatory for training.
