Who decides what to purchase for the collection?

The purchase of items for the central library collection is governed by the collection development policy which defines the levels of collection for each subject area.

Collection Management Policy

Staff and students are encouraged to make suggestions for purchase and are asked for input on titles that are being considered for purchase.

At the end of each calendar year academic staff are asked to review the titles held in Student Reserve collection in their teaching areas. The library sends out lists of titles currently held on Student Reserve to all course convenors for this purpose.

For branch and departmental collections, purchases are related to the needs of these groups and purchasing decisions are made by library committees and/or by department staff.

Suggest the purchase of an item for the collection?

All members are welcome to suggest books and journals for purchase by the library. Library acquisitions staff can also provide access to Blackwells Collection Manager which can help you locate titles and alert you to new titles in your subject area.

Book suggestion forms are available from all CML branch libraries or can be downloaded as a PDF. Hand the completed form into your branch library or send it to library acquisitions staff through the internal mail or by email.

The library is unable to purchase new journals unless additional funding can be obtained. A journal review was to have been completed in 2006 but has been delayed.
