Margot de Koning Gans Image 2020 1xPhD Candidate

Margot de Koning Gans graduated at the Faculty of Medicine of University Utrecht, The Netherlands in 2009. Early 2020 she finished her training as a respiratory physician in The Netherlands at Haga Teaching Hospital, The Hague. During her training she focused on respiratory infectious diseases by doing research and clinical work at Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam. Shortly after she completed her training, she moved to New Zealand with her family.

Margot is about to start her PhD under the supervision of Dr Michael Maze and Professor Lutz Beckert. She will assess the impact of microbiology and clinical outcome in empyema and complicated parapneumonic effusion and will explore whether emerging technologies (e.g. nucleic acid amplification tests and ultrasound-guided pleural biopsy) add to the microbiological diagnosis of pleural infections, compared to standard care.
