Studying for a Master of Nursing Science

Profile

I spent a long spell in hospital during the second half of 2020. I was already in the midst of having a change of heart about my career, but this was the turning point. I looked around and watched the nurses combine my passions of the human body and helping others, and thought to myself, "I want to do that”. I want to be the person that nurses once were for me and be a light within the gloomy walls of the hospital. I realise that our health system is challenging to navigate and has its cracks, but if I could bring comfort, hope and help to someone in need, I would feel so fulfilled.

I completed a Bachelor of Sports Coaching majoring in Sports Science through the University of Canterbury, then began a Master of Sports Science in 2020. I ended this study halfway through the year to graduate with a postgraduate certificate instead.

I love the practical aspect of the MNSc study. During the placements and simulation sessions, I've been able to consolidate my learning and gain confidence as a nurse. I also love the small class sizes, which allow for more intimate teaching styles and accountability. I appreciate all my classmate too – our different backgrounds and life experiences enables us to have widened class discussions and a mature nursing education.

I know that Otago offers a lot of support services – academic, social, health and so on.  Although I haven't used them yet, I know they are there when I need them. Having access to the Canterbury Medical Library is super helpful too, it's a great, up-to-date resource. Also, because the MNSc course is small, the staff have made an effort to get to know each of us, which holds us all accountable and engaged in our learning.

After graduating, I want to spend my first few years in a hospital gaining experience. I would love to end up in the emergency department or in mental health, due to the fast-paced nature and diverse nursing days. However, wherever I end up, I know I'm going to love it and I can't wait to be out in the workforce.
