GGTUDRH visit

Following Dr MaryLeigh Moore’s visit to Mt Gambier last year, the Simulation Centre was pleased to welcome Sarah Boyd and Sandi Elliott from the Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health to Christchurch as delegates at the NZASH conference and symposium.
This was an opportunity to further strengthen the relationship between the two parties and continue to share ideas around simulation in healthcare and education.

GATE High School Visit
Senior students from the Rangi Ruru Girls’ High School Gifted and Talented Education (“GATE”) programme recently visited the UOC Simulation Centre.
They had a chance to practice some of the procedural skills the MBChB undergraduate students learn at the Centre including examining ears and eyes, basic resuscitation and testing mock urine samples.
In the Simulation Suite, the girls were able to see “Alex” (SimMan3G) in action and also how a simulation runs from behind the scenes.
The session was thoroughly enjoyed by the students and it is planned to extend it to other high school GATE programmes.
Dr Demian Szyld Visit
17th - 19th June 2014
The UOC Simulation Centre recently hosted Dr Demian Szyld for three days prior to his engagement as keynote speaker for the NZASH (NZ Association for Simulation in Healthcare) Symposium.
Demian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Centre in New York and Associate Medical Director of the New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences.
During his stay, Demian ran a workshop with the UOC Simulation Centre and CDHB Anaesthetic Departments joint simulation group and shared his expertise in debriefing techniques and evidence-based simulation-based education.
He also attended a cross-campus meeting of the Faculty Clinical Skills Subcommittee where his skills and interest in faculty development, teamwork and inter-professional education were well-utilised.
The visit was extremely useful for all those involved and it is hoped this is the beginning of an ongoing working relationship between the University and Demian.
IMSH Conference

John Dean recently travelled to San Francisco to attend the 14th annual International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare ("IMSH"). This is the annual conference of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare ("SSIH") and was held over four days (plus three days of pre-conference activities) and attracted more than 3000 delegates from 75 countries.
John attended a number of useful sessions before and during the conference, including:
- A pre-conference workshop at Stanford University showcasing the way they are using simulated patients;
- Connecting Medical Simulation to Cognition;
- Recognising Cognitive Errors;
- Why Simulation Education?;
- Improving Debriefing Skills through Peer Observation and Feedback;
- End of Life Simulation to enhance Compassionate Care; and
- To Err is Human, to Simulate Divine.
The trip also gave John, in his role as chair of the New Zealand Association for Simulation in Healthcare ("NZASH"), a chance to meet the keynote speakers for the upcoming NZASH Symposium in Christchurch in June and to re-sign the affiliation document with SSIH on behalf of NZASH.
