NURS418 Nursing Education - Principles and Practice

Addresses the principles of education theory and practice related to clinical and nursing education settings. Pedagogical approaches are introduced and the socio-political foundations for nursing education are evaluated.

Foundational knowledge of educational theory and principles of assessment and evaluation are presented in relation to specific teaching and learning environments, including clinical. Interest could be expected from registered nurses whose roles involve patient and staff education at various levels: for example, clinical nurses, preceptors, workplace in-service educators and nurses working in tertiary education.

Paper Structure
The first part of the paper addresses key principles of teaching and learning, incorporating appropriate theory.

In the second part of the paper, students have an opportunity to demonstrate their teaching expertise and reflect on appropriate models of teaching for their practice.

In the third and final part of the paper, students are introduced to developments in teaching and learning, including how these address the changing socio-political environment.
Teaching Arrangements

One 3-day study block and one 2-day study block (two study blocks in total)

There is no compulsory textbook for this paper.

A range of general readings and references will be provided. However, it is expected, due to different directions a student can take in this paper, that they will be primarily responsible for researching their chosen topic. The student is expected to access additional literature in order to complete assigned tasks.

Access to several educational periodicals and a range of other resources is available via the library database system and/or remote library services based at the Dunedin campus.

  1. As a result of their own advancement in educational knowledge and approaches to learning, understand the relationship between empowerment and education
  2. Critically analyse a range of educational methods and relate them to identified theories of learning
  3. Use selected teaching and learning activities to critically evaluate the bridging of the theory-practice gap within their own educational practice
  4. As a result of this knowledge, directly or indirectly improve patient outcomes

  6. Identify their own learning and development needs as an educator/teacher within the current health climate
