Financial assistance available for full-time students

In recent years our postgraduate students have come from a variety of countries, including Australia, Canada, UK, USA, Germany, Italy, as well as New Zealand. There are various forms of financial assistance available for postgraduate study.

Teaching fellowship

  • value from NZ$7,500 p.a.
  • duties: teaching courses in beginners' Latin or Greek
  • usual qualification required: MA in Classics

Tutoring Positions

  • value up to NZ$2000 p.a.
  • duties: tutoring and marking for 100-level and 200-level Classical Studies papers
  • qualification required: BA (Hons) in Classics

University of Otago postgraduate scholarships for PhD study

All Doctoral students enrolling for the first time at a New Zealand university from 2006 are eligible to pay tuition fees at the New Zealand domestic level. The University of Otago Postgraduate Scholarships are awarded to PhD candidates on the basis of academic merit, research ability and suitability within the Programme. They provide an emolument of $25,000 per year, the payment of fees at domestic level for up to 3 years, and partial thesis expenses.

University of Otago Postgraduate Award / International Masters' Award

The University of Otago International Postgraduate Awards are awarded to Masters' candidates in their thesis year of study. They provide an annual emolument of $13,000 for up to 1 year, the payment of the fees at international level and partial thesis expenses.

Bruggeman Postgraduate Scholarship in Classics

Established in 1990 by the estate of P. M. Bruggeman for the purpose of encouraging research in Latin, Ancient Greek, or Classical Studies at the University of Otago, this scholarship has a value of NZ$13,000.
