Summer 2021 Letterpress Courses with John Holmes

About Letterpress courses

Invented in the mid-15th century, letterpress printing’s recent revival as an artisan form is flourishing where printing presses survive. This course offers a rare opportunity to work with experts to explore the technique and its artistic properties. During this intensive short course, participants will be fully immersed in letterpress printing by hand.

One-hour lunch break, morning tea and coffee provided. Laboratory coats will be provided. Please bring your own hand towel.

Otakou Press

The University of Otago Library is fortunate to have three working printing presses: an 1845 Albion, an 1863 Columbian “Eagle’ Press, a 1950s Vandercook proofing press, and an etching press. The working type is mainly Garamond, supplemented by a large selection of wooden type and the newly acquired Gill collection from John McGlashan College. One or two limited edition publications are planned and printed each year through the Printer in Residence Programme.

Some short courses are also offered each year to build a new community of letterpress printers.
