    Overview

A supervised research project up to 10,000 words involving the development, implementation and reporting of an original topic in the student’s area of professional interest within health sciences.

HASC 780 is a 30-point "research project" and is the smallest research component option for the Master of Health Sciences. The research project is limited in scope and typically involves a systematic review, pilot study, audit or case study. The project is planned, conducted and reported by the student under the supervision of an academic member of staff in the programme where the student is studying. The research project is completed (from proposal to final submission) in one semester. Students enrolling in HASC 780 are normally required to have already completed a Master's level research methods paper (such as HASC 817) as part of their Master of Health Sciences programme, and this is usually done just prior to the HASC 780 research project.

HASC 780 is not available for all endorsements of the Master of Health Sciences.

A 'Guide to Master of Health Sciences Research Options' is available from Postgraduate Programme Administrators.

This paper may be offered by distance learning in all standard teaching periods. For more information, please email the relevant address for your campus listed in the Contact section below.

    Teaching staff
Teaching staff consist solely of the student's supervisor(s). Generally, only one supervisor is required; however, in some instances a second co-supervisor may be appropriate. Supervisory arrangements are approved by the programme Convenor through the research proposal approval process.
    Paper Structure

HASC 780 begins with the student identifying the topic they want to research and finding a supervisor. A research proposal is prepared (in consultation with the supervisor) and submitted for approval. Once the proposal is approved, the student undertakes the project as outlined in the proposal. Regular meetings with the supervisor are expected, and may be either online or in-person, depending on departmental requirements. A final research report (of up to 10,000 words) is submitted for marking at the end of the semester. The report is marked by two independent markers, who submit their recommendations to the Convenor; the Convenor determines the final result.

    Teaching Arrangements

The Distance Learning offering of this paper is a combination of remote and in-person teaching.

A Supervision Memorandum of Understanding (establishing responsibilities, expectations, timelines, etc for both student and supervisor) is to be prepared at the beginning of the project.

    Textbooks
Not applicable - research resources will vary depending on the research project involved and should be discussed with the supervisor.
