LING421 Special Topic: Computer Assisted Language Learning

This paper provides an overview of current topics in computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Students will be introduced to key concepts in CALL and develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the use of technology for the main language areas (grammar vocabulary), skills (reading, writing, pronunciation, listening, speaking) and culture. They will learn to use, evaluate and apply a variety of language specific and generic computer applications for language teaching and learning.

Paper Structure

In this paper students will explore CALL through readings, discussions and personal application. Students will read and discuss key studies in CALL and learn to use, evaluate and apply a wide range of computer applications (e.g. language programs, mobile apps, social networking sites, games) for language teaching and learning. Each unit has a practical, a theoretical and a reflective component.

Students will have hands-on sessions with the applications (in their chosen second language), read the related literature and reflect in their personal blog on their pedagogical use and their impact on second language education.
