PSCI202 Medicines and Disease

Study of the use of microbes to make medicines, the sterile manufacture of medicines and the pathogenesis of common conditions treated or managed with pharmacotherapy.

PSCI202 provides students intending on working in the pharmaceutical industry, or related fields, with an overview of:

  1. important diseases that are treated with pharmacotherapy;
  2. the role of the immune system in preventing and causing disease as well as how components of the immune system are used in pharmacotherapy; and
  3. pharmaceutical microbiology.

Pharmaceutical microbiology includes the use of microbes to make medicines, how microbial contamination of medicines is prevented.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the paper will be able to:

  1. Describe how microbes and biotechnology are used to make medicines and the advantages and disadvantages associated with the technologies
  2. Describe the differences between sterile and non-sterile medicines, and when they are used
  3. Explain the sources of microbial contamination and how sterility of medicines can be achieved
  4. Discuss the pathogenesis of common conditions treated, managed or prevented with pharmacotherapy
  5. Explain the role of the immune system in preventing disease and in causing pathology and how components of the immune system are used in pharmacotherapy
  6. Apply analytical laboratory skills
