EDUC432 Special Topic: Digital Technologies and Knowledge Building

New Zealand is fast becoming a knowledge society, and under the New Zealand Curriculum, students are encouraged to become "competent thinkers and problem solvers, [who] actively seek, use, and create knowledge". Our future-oriented education system reflects these changes. This paper is designed for teachers and educators who are interested in supporting young people to develop their capacities in creating knowledge in a future-oriented society. This paper will appeal to future-oriented teachers or educators and will examine theories and practices related to computer-supported collaborative learning and knowledge-building pedagogies. Knowledge Forum will be used in this paper to provide hands-on experience in creating knowledge building environments. No technical computing knowledge is required to take this paper.

Paper Structure
The paper is arranged around several discussion conferences, each looking at a separate topic related to the knowledge-building communities (KBC) model. Conferences normally run for two weeks and involve a combination of readings and online asynchronous discussions.
Teaching Arrangements
This is an online distance learning paper.
Students will be expected to access required readings via the library and the Internet and to source their own relevant readings.
