    An introduction to contemporary theories of leadership and management as integrated into the discipline of nursing, including the changing health care environment, the tasks of nursing management, the process of nursing leadership, and cultural safety and nursing leadership in New Zealand.

    This paper focuses on leading nursing communities. Content includes management of personnel, strategic planning, performance, risk management, capacity building and clinical governance.

    Paper Structure

    Two key themes are explored:

    • Influencing Nursing covers sustaining leadership in practice and a users' orientation on administration
    • Thinking Strategically involves the policy/provision interface and strategy for healthcare organisations
    Teaching Arrangements

    This Distance Learning paper is a combination of remote and in-person teaching.

    Learning Outcomes

    In relation to course themes, the nurse leader who successfully completes the paper will be in a position to:

    • Influence Nursing Leadership and Management
      1. Demonstrate understanding of leadership principles as applied to their personal leadership development and to the healthcare environment in which they work
      2. Apply knowledge of group roles, processes and dynamics to facilitate effective communication and consultation processes within a multi-disciplinary healthcare organisation
      3. Show knowledge of the interface between the practice setting and other relevant agencies (including Māori and Pacific Island health providers)
      4. Apply the principles of cultural safety in nursing practice in alignment with the policies of the Nursing Council of New Zealand and the University of Otago's commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi
      5. Apply knowledge of "professional oversight" and mentorship to facilitate effective leadership within diverse healthcare teams
    • Think Strategically
      1. Identify key issues of strategic management and organisational performance in healthcare organisations
      2. Demonstrate understanding of national and international policies and legislation impacting on workforce development in nursing communities
      3. Administer, monitor and evaluate nursing care delivery systems using contemporary nursing management theories and practices
      4. Demonstrate understanding of accounting principles for decision-making and budget purposes
      5. Demonstrate understanding of environmental analysis and strategic planning processes and their application to development of practice
