Intensive Sanskrit, reading both scriptures and commentaries from classical Sanskrit literature. Particular attention is paid to grammatical and stylistic features and to the manner in which ideas are presented.

Students who successfully complete the paper will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of a wide range of Sanskrit grammatical forms, and of Sanskrit syntax;
- Demonstrate knowledge of essential Sanskrit vocabulary;
- Read Sanskrit in both Roman and Devanagari script and;
- Attempt the translation of unseen Sanskrit texts;
- Translate prepared Sanskrit texts;
- Demonstrate an understanding of Sanskrit philology and its application in the study of Indian religions;
- Provide a piece of sustained translation and study of Sanskrit text.
