What is involved in counselling?
This paper is an introduction to the world of counselling. It provides a stimulating introduction to the field of guidance and counselling. The focus will be on the diverse and contested nature of counselling and the variety of approaches. This paper will not teach you to be a counsellor, but will develop your appreciation and understanding of this interesting area, which is relevant to any future teachers or social workers and any current or future 'client' of counselling-type services. The topics include the contested nature and cultural context of counselling, ethical issues and introduction to some major theories in this field.

Students who successfully complete this paper will be able to:
- Explain or describe some key counselling/psychotherapy ideas, concepts or terms
- Discuss and critically evaluate some key and contested issues related to counselling/psychotherapy
- Apply their understanding of the role and functioning of counselling in relation to some societal issues
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of what type of differences distinguish one approach of counselling from another
- Demonstrate an understanding of ethical principles and be able to apply these to ethical dilemmas
- Reflect on some of the counselling and wellbeing related exercises that may be relevant and/or beneficial for their personal and/or potential future professional life
