Travel Medicine is a recognised specialty which encompasses the health and wellbeing of travellers before, during and after international travel. In the New Zealand context it primarily involves assessing risk pre-travel and advising intending travellers on how to mitigate risk (including behaviour, immunoprophylaxis and chemoprophylaxis. Care and management of the ill returning traveller is also included.
In addition, understanding collaborative practice between health care professionals is key as many different disciplines may be involved.
We offer a Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Travel Medicine. The Postgraduate Certificate enables students to master the key principles of risk assessment and preparation of the intending traveller, travel vaccines and vaccinology, prevention of food and water borne illness and other possible risks for intending travellers. The Postgraduate Diploma builds on this knowledge and explores tropical infectious diseases in depth. Depending on elective paper selection, either wilderness and expedition medicine or refugee and migrant health is further explored.
