I look across 
the passage 
through 
an open door 
at the phalanx 
of dolls 
arranged 
on a bed 

tallest at the back 
please 

smile for the birdie 

(next day 
I post Jemima 
in her blue
knitted bonnet
to join them)

what else
did she miss
doll-sized
when the lights
went out
