DEnTRengen Program

Dental Engineering and Tissue Regeneration.

We have a PhD project developing antimicrobial constructs for intra-oral applications. The constructs will be fabricated to allow slow release into oral wounds, particular targeting periodontal pockets and materials for wound healing and bone regeneration.

The matrices will be formed using a microencapsulated active agent, with a light cross-linkable polymer as well as other with other structural proteins. The PhD will develop skills in formulation, 3D bioprinting, antimicrobial testing, cell culture (proliferation, osteogenic and wounding assays), and in vivo testing. The project is suitable for candidates with a Honour’s degree in Dentistry, or a BSc(Hons)/MSc in a relevant field. The candidate should also have an interest in cellular and molecular biology. Training will be provided throughout the project.

The work will be based in the Dental Faculty at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand and be led by Associate Professor Dawn Coates.

The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team with well recognised research outputs in this field.

The team includes Associate Professor Natalie Medlicott, Professor Warwick Duncan, Dr KC Li, Professor Neil Waddell and Dr Khoon Lim. Our research team has a good track record of commercialising research. The candidate should also be enthusiastic and passionate about research and keen to learn new skills.

The applicant must be eligible for admission to the PhD programme at the University of Otago, and apply for a University of Otago doctoral scholarship.
