The Healthier Lives National Science Challenge was launched at the Otākou marae, Dunedin, by the Hon Steven Joyce, on 4 December, 2015.

Professor Jim Mann, director of Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research, will lead the Healthier Lives National Science Challenge, which is hosted by the University of Otago.  Deputy directors are Professor Parry Guilford, University of Otago, and Professor Cliona Ni Mhurchu, University of Auckland.

The Otākou Rūnanga hosted the launch at the picturesque Otākou marae on the Otago Peninsula, which was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), partner Universities and Research Institutes, and key stakeholders including policy makers, health researchers, health providers and community groups.
