A recent review of vaping and its effect on weight control by researchers at Massey University, has explored the idea that e-cigarettes could be used to help people eat less.

Professor Jim Mann, Director of the Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre at the University of Otago, has commented on this approach. He suggests that effective advertising restrictions, calorie reductions and junk food controls would be more effective tools in weight management.

If people are concerned that quitting smoking will lead to excess weight gain, then maybe e-cigarettes could help, says Professor Mann.  But without good evidence about the long-term impact of vaping, it is not recommended as a weight control strategy.

The NZ Ministry of Health and another health expert also expressed concern about the use of e-cigarettes for losing weight.
