Research summary | My research interests are medical education and rural health |
Teaching | My current teaching commitments include the rural 5th year attachment at DSM and co convening postgraduate papers of Ethics in practice, and Teaching and Learning in Clinical practice. I have assisted in the redesign of the Teaching and Learning paper to increase the practical component of the learning while retaining it's academic basis. We have formed a team to evaluate the impact on practice of completing these postgraduate papers. |
Memberships | I am member of the Medical Assessment Subcommittee (MASC). I have worked with rural communities in the past redesigning local health services and taking them into community ownership, in Lawrence and Alexandra, where I was part of the board set up to run these services. |
Clinical | I work as a part time Rural GP at Health Central in Alexandra, Central Otago. My clinical interests lie in the power of plant-based nutrition to prevent and reverse many of our common chronic diseases and the role of lifestyle medicine in clinical practice. I am developing this aspect of my practice in addition to the standard GP role. |
Research
I researched the impact of the Dunedin medical school's 5th-year undergraduate rural health attachment on intentions to practice rurally, and then explored the role rural hospitals play in the New Zealand health system. As part of the rural undergraduate program, I and a colleague co developed a simulation of general practice (The SECO clinic), to help prepare students for working in the community.
I have lead a research team exploring the educational benefits of the SECO clinic and we have published 2 articles so far, with further manuscripts under development. SECO has also been adopted by Keele University in the UK for training of medical students and Leeds University for training of Physician assistants. We are now in the process of adapting this learning technology for use with rural nurse specialists on the West Coast, and setting up a formal evaluation.
I was able to join a departmental team in developing and researching the concept of Communities of Clinical Practice (CoCP), in both general practice and hospital settings to understand the patient's care world and the potential for use of CoCP care maps to add value to clincical practice.
Additional details
I am member of Evidence Based Eating NZ, a group of lay people and health practitioners whose goal is to inform New Zealanders of the potential of plant-based nutrition to allow them the ability to choose this option for themselves.
