Overview
Poor oocyte (egg) quality is a leading cause of reduced fertility in humans and animals. However, the factors underpinning oocyte quality are poorly understood.
This project will examine gene expression differences between good and poor quality sheep oocytes.
We are particularly interested in the role of members of the transforming growth factor beta (TGFB) family and mitochondria in determining oocyte quality.
Differentially expressed genes will be physiologically tested to determine how these candidate factors affect oocyte quality using in vitro embryo production techniques along with confocal and electron microscopy.
