    Overview

    Introduction to workplace safety with an emphasis on managing health and safety systems and resources.

    This paper has a focus on the analysis and risk management of environmental and psychosocial conditions that contribute to workplace injury and disease. Students will be taught best practice in health and safety management through developing hands on skills in hazard recognition, control and surveillance. Team based learning is emphasised. Graduates will be able to develop and operationalise a strategy to manage health and safety in the workplace so as to meet, and exceed, the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

    The focus areas of this paper are:

    • Statutory requirements for health and safety in the workplace.
    • Principles of occupational safety.
    • Identification, assessment and control of safety hazards in the workplace.
    • Integrating health and safety programmes into management systems.
    Teaching Arrangements

    This Distance Learning paper is a combination of remote and in-person teaching.

    A three-day compulsory block weekend workshop in Dunedin and interactive expert-led seminars by video conferencing through Zoom.

    Learning Outcomes
