Our workspaces

The OCSL offers four distinct areas for clinical learning and education.

The main clinical area

This area can accommodate 14–20 people.

The area is split into two open-plan sections.

The first area has tables and standard seating for 14 people, and a laptop/screen for presentations (audio is delivered through the TV).

The second, adjacent area, is used for group clinical education and practice. In this space there is a hospital bed with mobile wall and mock clinical fixtures, a permanent advanced airway setup, and two secondary mobile permanent advanced airway stations. CPR and advanced airway models are shelved in this area. The area can comfortably accommodate 12–16 users for practical clinical education. There is no standard seating in this area.

All main clinical area users must reset the area back to its standard format once the education session has been completed.

The hospital area is situated at the end of the main clinical area. It is common for those who use the venue to book and use the hospital area while using the main clinical area. The area can accommodate 10–15 people. There is no standard seating.

The hospital area has two mock hospital bed spaces with mock clinical wall fixtures (mock oxygen with no gas flow, suction, patient call bell etc).

The first bed space contains an Advanced Life Support (ALS) adult model using Vital Sim technology and a well-stocked emergency (crash) trolley with a live defibrillator. The defibrillator may only be used on the adult model, and only by staff trained to use the defibrillator for teaching (this is OCSL policy).

The second bed space contains and advanced airway child model. The child model does not support advanced technology and cannot be used with the defibrillator. The child model can be used with advanced airway devices.

All users of the hospital area must reset it to its default format once the education session has been completed.

No food or drink is permitted in the hospital area.

The SECO Clinic rooms

The Safe and Effective Clinic Outcomes (SECO) rooms are heavily utilised by ALM4 and ALM5, and can accommodate 30–40 people.

These rooms are used predominantly for simulation of clinic-style examinations and assessment for ALM students, commonly using actors and patients. These rooms can be adapted to fit many other purposes for clinical education teaching.

There are six large clinic rooms which can each be divided into two cubicle-style spaces, for a total of 12. This allows the accommodation of large groups, or smaller groups wishing to practice examining patients or learn other clinical techniques.

The following wall-fixed equipment is available in each cubicle

  • Sphygmomanometer and colour-coded cuffs (small, large, and extra-large)
  • Ophthalmoscope
  • Otoscope

Each cubicle also contains

  • Examination plinth (with pillow)
  • Computer and desk (requires University of Otago login)
  • Computer desk chair and two standard chairs
  • Non-sterile gloves
  • Hand gel and tissues

The equipment and clinic room size doubles when the partition is removed.

All users of the SECO Clinic rooms must reset the area to its default format once the education session is complete.

No food or drink except for bottled water is permitted in the SECO Clinic rooms.

The patient and student waiting areas are part of the SECO Clinic rooms. Patients and actors can wait in their own "waiting room" as they would at a clinic, while student and/or examiners wait at the opposite end of the clinic's corridor.

Food and drink may be consumed in both patient and student waiting areas, and also the main corridor of the OCSL (seats 8–10 people).

The tutorial room is located next to and accessed via a door adjacent to the student waiting area of the SECO Clinic rooms. This room is heavily utilised by the ALM4 and ALM5 programmes.

The tutorial room has seating and tables arranged to allow 10–14 people to view the 183 cm (72 inch) wall-mounted screen. The room can be reconfigured to other formats suited to each session's individual needs.

The room has a computer linked to the screen via HDMI for presentations, as well as an audio output system.
