The Effects of Mild Sleep Deprivation on Child Eating Behaviours and Exposure to Digital Screens

Rosie Jackson, PhD Candidate

Children who do not get enough sleep are at increased risk of obesity, however the mechanisms that control this relationship are unclear. The DREAM study is a randomised control trial that is aiming to understand the mechanistic link between sleep and obesity in 8-12 year old children. In my PhD I will look to see if dietary and sedentary factors mediate this relationship. In particular, I will analyse whether mild sleep deprivation affects children’s desire to eat unhealthy foods, obesity associated eating behaviours and the amount of time spent in front of digital screens.
