Sexual Cultures in Aotearoa New Zealand Education.

A recently released book, Sexual Cultures in Aotearoa New Zealand Education, edited by University of Otago Senior Lecturer Dr Alex Gunn and Dr Lee A. Smith, is gaining national attention as a work which makes an important contribution to discussions of sexuality and education.

The book - produced by the Otago University Press - is described both as "essential reading for educators" and a "call to action" for inclusive teaching that supports sexual and gender diversity. A key concept in the work is exploration of assumptions surrounding heterosexuality as a norm which underpins education, and how this can be discriminatory and have a negative impact on teachers, students and parents in a range of education settings.

Dr Gunn was interviewed by Radio Live On December 7. During the interview she discussed several key questions raised in the book, such as how education settings can become sites of inclusion for sexual and gender diversity rather than places which perpetuate cultures of discriminatory practice.

Dr Smith completed her Phd in Education at the University of Otago in 2012.
