Biography

I came to the College of Education as a lecturer in Health and Physical Education after 10 years initially in primary teaching followed by 10 years in secondary teaching which included positions as Head of Department in Southland and Canterbury. I contributed to the development of NCEA in Health Education as a Regional Professional Development facilitator as well as working in Advisory for School Support and Physical Education in secondary schools.

Teaching Areas

  • Physical Education
  • Health Education
  • Professional Practice

Research Interests

My recent research revolved around the examination of the cultural, social and gender influences on young males with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) and their engagement in physical education and sport. My master’s thesis (awarded with distinction) was a critical examination of the ways developmental discourses influence the experiences of young disabled people during their schooling. I am interested in  issues of equity and difference through the innovative use of narrative method, telling stories of difference that enable students, academics and professionals alike to engage both emotionally and cognitively with the subject.
