Biography

I have been a teacher educator at the University of Otago College of Education (previously Dunedin College of Education) since June 1998. I was the foundation Head of Department Curriculum Development and Teaching, following the merger of the University of Otago with the Dunedin College of Education from 2007-2010.

Prior to that I was a secondary teacher and Head of Department in Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Health Education, with teaching positions in six secondary schools in Nelson, Waikato and Dunedin. Since 1999, I have contributed to a range of Ministry of Education initiatives, including facilitating professional development for NCEA - and Education Outside the Classroom guidelines; and panel writing for Level 3 Achievement Standards. In 2003, I was selected to attend the 6th International Session for Physical Educators and Officials of Higher Education Institutions, at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia, Greece. This stimulated my interest in examining the sociological significance of Olympism and the Olympic Ideals in Physical Education teaching and learning programmes.

My teaching and professional supervision of students at UOCE focuses on secondary education, especially in Physical Education, Education Outside the Classroom, Outdoor Education, and contemporary issues in secondary schools.

My current research focuses on the nature of learning in environments outside the classroom. In particular, I am interested in how adventure is perceived by young people, and secondly, the reasons why school groups travel internationally.
