Andrea Knowles

Professional Practice Fellow

Biography

I have been a teacher educator at the University of Otago College of Education since 2011. Prior to that I held teaching, head of department of Mathematics and senior leadership roles in a diverse range of secondary schools across England, northern Queensland and New Zealand.

I have a strong interest in how Mathematics is taught in both primary and secondary schools and how the numeracy competency of our pre-service teachers and 1st-year undergraduates across the university can be best supported. Current research focuses on the development of a sustainable model of support for university students identified with low numeracy. This is part of a larger undertaking to improve retention and success rates of first year students and has involved the development of a robust tool for the assessment of adult numeracy competency.

My teaching and supervision of students focusses on primary and secondary students enrolled in the Bachelor of Teaching and Masters of Teaching and Learning programmes for initial teacher education.
