Our Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes enable you to become a qualified teacher in Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary Education.
Restricted entry applies to these programmes - you must apply and be offered a place. Applications are to be submitted online (using the yellow "Apply Now" button at the top of each qualification webpage).
To be sure teaching is the career path for you, it is strongly recommended that intending applicants approach a school or centre, to arrange to spend a day observing a typical day’s teaching, prior to submitting your application.
Applications for teaching programmes OPEN on 1 MAY annually.
- Bachelor of Teaching
Applications for the undergraduate BTchg are preferred by 31 AUGUST. For study in 2020, applications may be accepted up to 30 SEPTEMBER 2019.
- Master of Teaching and Learning
Applications for the postgraduate MTchgLn closed on 31 JULY.
Prospective students are strongly advised to submit applications before the due dates (listed above).
Application closing dates for various other postgraduate and undergraduate education programmes and courses offered at the Dunedin Campus may be later than 31 August. Refer to the postgraduate programmes, or contact firstname.lastname@example.org, for further information.

If you wish to apply for a postgraduate Master of Teaching and Learning programme, please refer to Information for new MTchgLn applicants. Intending MTchgLn (Secondary Education) applicants can check the minimum requirements (pre-requisites) for each secondary school teaching subject, by referring to the table of Secondary Curriculum Subjects.
It is recommended that all intending initial teacher education (ITE) applicants read the Information for students who need to be safety checked under the Children's Act 2014 and also the University of Otago Programme entrance requirements.
All applicants who apply for our initial teacher education programmes are required to participate in an interview. The purpose of the interview is to assess your suitability for teacher education and a subsequent career in teaching.
