Applying to an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme

Our Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes enable you to become a qualified teacher in Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary Education.

Restricted entry applies to these programmes - you must apply and be offered a place.  Applications are to be submitted online.

To be sure teaching is the career path for you, it is strongly recommended that intending applicants approach a school or centre, to arrange to spend a day observing a typical day’s teaching, prior to submitting your application.

Application dates

Applications for teaching programmes in 2019 are now open.

Applications for the undergraduate Bachelor of Teaching are preferred by 31 AUGUST.

Applications for the postgraduate Master of Teaching and Learning are due by 31 JULY.

Prospective students are strongly advised to submit applications before the due dates (listed above).

Application closing dates for various other postgraduate programmes and education courses offered at the Dunedin Campus may be later than 31 August, so please refer to the postgraduate information or contact the College of Education for details.

If you are intending to apply for an undergraduate Bachelor of Teaching programme, please refer to Information for new BTchg applicants for a step-by-step guide about the application process.

If you wish to apply for a postgraduate Master of Teaching and Learning programme, please refer to Information for new MTchgLn applicants.  Intending MTchgLn (Secondary Education) applicants can check the minimum requirements (pre-requisites) for each secondary school teaching subject, by referring to the table of Secondary Curriculum Subjects.

It is recommended that all intending initial teacher education (ITE) applicants read the Information for students who need to be safety checked under the Vulnerable Children Act and also the University of Otago Programme entrance requirements.
