Critical Bibliography

This bibliography includes the major arcana previously listed in Ackerley & Clipper, A Companion to 'Under the Volcano' (Vancouver: UBC Press, 1984), but replaces its short-title list with a more orthodox bibliography. It emphasises texts Lowry is known to have used, particularly obscure ones; and critical works that have contributed to the [bottomless] annotation of the novel. Copies from Lowry's library [UBC Special Collections] have been cited when possible (these are *starred). Texts cited but once usually form part of that specific annotation, and, for the sake of economy, standard editions of major writers (Shakespeare, Dante) are assumed as a virtual presence, unless Lowry is known to have made curious use of them (hence Marlowe, but not Goethe).

This bibliography should be complemented by a similar listing of films and other influences; but that is beyond the present intention, which is, broadly, like Apollinaire descending into l'Enfer, to catalogue the "unimaginable library" of the dead, to which Lowry's masterpiece belongs and from whose infinite variety it borrows.
