The statue is not in fact that of Victoriano Huerta, president of Mexico from 1913 to 1914, but of Emiliano Zapata, revolutionary hero of the state of Morelos. Lowry has changed the statue to that of Huerta because the drunken irresponsibility of the latter's brief presidency better typifies the Consul.
