Locations > Tlaxcala > The Church and Convent of San Francisco

In said Convent, according to tradition, were baptized the four Senators of the Tlaxcaltecan Republic, existing still on the right side of the Church the Baptismal Font, being their God-Fathers the conqueror Hernán Cortés and several of his CaptainsUTV, 298.

The Church of San Francisco in Tlaxcala, and the Convent of the same name, are the oldest of the American mainland, dating from 1521; there the baptism of the Senators took place, though probably not in the year 1520 which the inscription above the font proclaims.

Above: The baptism of the lords of Tlaxcala. From Gruzinski, The Aztecs, 97.
In the chapel of the right side there is still the famous pulpit from where was preached the New World, for the first time, the GospelUTV, 298.

The deteriorating inscription upon the pulpit confirms this claim: Aqui tuvo principio el Sto Evangelio en este Nuevo Mundo. Primer púlpito de Nueva España. ("Here for the first time the Holy Gospel was preached in this New World. The first pulpit of New Spain.")

Left: On the right side of the entrance is erected a majestic tower, which is rated as the only one through AmericaUTV, 298.

The tourist folder presumably means, the only church tower in the Americas which is separated from its church.
