...and a pier going right out into the water. They would build this pier themselves when the tide was out, sinking the posts one by one down the steep slanting beach. Post by post they'd build it until one day they could dive from the end into the seaUTV, 269.

Lowry's pier at Dollarton was an intensely personal symbol, and the news of its collapse in 1955 left him almost literally heartbroken. Even here there is a strong sense of identification of the frail structure and the rebuilding of the Consul's and Yvonne's lives.
