Allerseelen – Richard Strauss

Do you remember the Strauss song we used to sing? Once a year the dead live for a day. Oh come to me again as once in May.UTV, 39.

The eighth and final song of Opus 10 by Richard Strauss (1864-1949), set to the words of the Austrian poet Hermann von Gilm (1812-64), making reference to the belief that on All Soul's Day the souls of the dead will communicate with the living. The phrase 'wie einst im Mai' (as once in May) acts as a refrain.
