Samuel Liddell "MacGregor" Mathers (1854-1918) was a founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, to which Aleister Crowley, a former pupil of his, later belonged. Mathers' translation of The Qabbalah Unveiled from the Latin Kabbala Dunatta was highly influential, as it was the most accessible English translation.

The process of contacting one's guardian angel is outlined in Mathers' The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abra-melin, the Mage, which, according to Margerie, Lowry studied carefully.

The prodecure requires one to lose oneself to the world for a time, and if done incorrectly, can lead to insanity; the Consul manages to avoid this insanity by remaining drunk.
