Ian's advice to learners

Your job as a learner is to take everything you can from every learning opportunity you get, and executive education courses at Otago are rich opportunities to soak up knowledge and skills from the experiences of both colleagues and facilitators.

Ian on working at Executive Education

After a career of almost 50 years as a student, teacher, researcher, and practitioner of the arts of negotiation, mediation, and labour and employment relations, I figure I know a thing or two, and I very much enjoy the cut and thrust of the sort of robust discussion that typically takes place in the Executive Education environment.

Ian on his role at Executive Education

I teach employment relations, using real cases to examine the rights and obligations of employers and employees, and the processes of negotiation, mediation, and adjudication through which parties implement and enforce their rights.

International teaching and industry experience

I have taught at Otago University since moving here from California in 1987. I have also taught every couple of years since 1993 at both the University of Vienna, Austria, and the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Prior to moving to New Zealand, and following graduate school at Illinois, I spent 15 years as a labour relations practitioner in the United States, including seven years as the director of labour representation for the major law enforcement federation in California. Here in New Zealand I was a member of the Employment Tribunal from 1993 to 2002, including two years as Chief of the Tribunal. I have served on various other government tribunals and continue to have an active employment mediation (and occasional arbitration) practice.

Personal membership and key positions

I am a member of many professional associations in the fields of labour and employment relations and negotiation and conflict resolution. As a practitioner, I am an Associate of the Arbitrators & Mediators Institute of New Zealand (AMINZ) and a Member of the AMINZ Panel of Certified Mediators.
