Research interests

Dr Nick Magon carried out his PhD at the Centre for Free Radical Research under the supervision of Professors' Mark Hampton, Tony Kettle and Richard Gearry. He investigated inflammatory biomarkers produced as a result of neutrophil activation, primarily using protein purification and mass spectrometry.

After his PhD, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at the University of Geneva. There he investigated the molecular mechanisms of red blood cell ageing during cold storage using a range of techniques, including flow cytometry.

His current projects involve using mass spectrometry to characterise oxidative modifications to the neutrophil protein calprotectin that may be useful as biomarkers of inflammation, and to identify proteins that are being oxidatively-modified during the early stages of necroptosis. He is also responsible for maintaining and further developing our commercial oxidative biomarker ELISA kit.
