Thesis printing in the Department of Geology

Thesis format

All theses should be formatted for printing double sided with 30mm inside margins and 20mm margins on top, bottom, outside. There are no other strict rules for Otago theses. This guide has some recommendations about how you can format your thesis:

MSc submission printing

The Department of Geology will cover the cost of printing two softbound theses for MSc students (plus maps).

Follow these steps:

  1. Fill in one paper copy of the declaration form to be handed in loose with your thesis (not bound in to thesis) RSMSoftboundThesisDeclaration-2016-03.pdf
  2. Either: Print two copies of your thesis yourself, then get a Uniprint order form from Geology admin staff for soft-binding
    Or: Get a Uniprint order form from Geology admin staff for printing and soft-binding two copies
  3. Supply an electronic copy of your thesis to the Geology administrator, these are sometimes needed by external markers.
  4. Take your two soft-bound theses (and one loose declaration form) to the Geology administrator. If the administrator is on leave you can take your theses to the reception desk in the St David II building.
  5. Celebrate with your friends!

PhD submission printing

Department of Geology will cover the cost of printing four softbound theses for PhD students (plus maps).

Follow these steps:

  1. Fill in one paper copy of the declaration form to be handed in loose with your thesis (not bound in to thesis) –
    RSMSoftboundThesisDeclaration-2016-03.pdf.
  2. Either: Print four copies of your thesis yourself, then get a Uniprint order form from Geology admin staff for soft-binding
    Or: Get a Uniprint order form from Geology admin staff for printing and soft-binding four copies.
  3. Supply an electronic copy of your thesis to the Geology administrator, these are sometimes needed by external markers.
  4. Take your four soft-bound theses (and one loose declaration form) to the to the reception desk in the St David II building.

Final hard-bound printing for MSc and PhD

Department of Geology or Doctoral office will cover the cost of printing and hard-binding two copies of your thesis (plus maps). The student or supervisor will need to pay for any additional copies. If the student is not in Dunedin they should follow all the steps below and supply all files electronically to the Geology administrator.

Follow these steps:

  1. Fill out and print two copies of the Author declaration form
  2. Fill out and print one copy of the bindery order form
  3. Get a form to cover thesis production costs from the Doctoral office. Only students that finish MSc in 1.5 years or PhD in 4 years can get these. Check with Doctoral office or Geology administrator if you are unsure of eligibility. Department will supply order form for ineligible students.
  4. Take to Uniprint: Electronic version of thesis, two x printed declaration forms, one x bindery order form, printing order form.
  5. Talk to Uniprint about additional copies you require and how to pay for them.
  6. Supply an electronic version to Geology admin staff for the theses archive.
  7. PhD student: Take two hardbound theses to the Doctoral office.
    MSC student: Take your two hardbound theses to the Geology administrator. If the administrator is on leave you can take your theses to the reception desk in the St David II building.
  8. Celebrate with your friends!
