The Geology Department hosted a 2-day short course on May 20-21 by Prof Robert Bodnar on "Fluids in Magmatic-Hydrothermal Systems." The course was offered as part of his 2 week tour of New Zealand universities and major gold mines sponsored by AusIMM NZ Branch.

Attendees Bob Bodnar short course
Attendees of the “Fluids in Magmatic-Hydrothermal Systems” short course included 4th-year and postgraduate students and staff from the Geology Department as well as visitors from overseas universities and local industry

Bob is University Distinguished Professor and C.C. Garvin Professor of Geochemistry at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. His expertise is in crustal fluids through the study of fluid inclusions in experimental systems, ore deposits and petroleum systems, and in melt inclusions in igneous rocks. Of particular note is his application of fluid inclusion research in mineral exploration undertaken through a large number of research contracts and grants from industry.

The course included:

  • Introduction to fluids in the earth
  • Introduction to fluid inclusion systematics
  • Introduction to melt inclusion systematics
  • Phase equilibria and volumetric properties of model fluid systems
  • Fluids in sedimentary basins and MVT deposits
  • Fluids in metamorphic environments and lode gold deposits
  • Fluids in continental geothermal systems and epithermal precious metals deposits
  • Fluids in submarine hydrothermal systems and massive sulfide deposits
  • Fluids in epizonal plutons and porphyry copper deposits

Bob also presented a seminar on “The whole earth geohydrologic cycle: From the clouds to the core” during his visit.

In 2009, the New Zealand Branch set up the AusIMM NZ Branch Visiting Lecturer programme to invite a prominent expert from overseas to present a series of lectures and short courses in different university, research and mining centres of New Zealand.
