Development of New Zealand Cretaceous and Cenozoic basins is related to the evolution of Zealandia, which has been influenced by eustatic sea-level changes, local tectonics, and plate boundary activity. The Eocene-Oligocene shallow marine sedimentary succession in the Waihao Valley, South Canterbury Basin, contains several unconformities. To understand the origin of these unconformities, a sequence stratigraphic and biostratigraphic framework based on field data has been developed. The outcome of this MSc Thesis is a chronostratigraphy that will identify the age of the missing strata and broaden our knowledge of southern Canterbury Basin Geology.
