Oblique aerial photo looking southwest along the Alpine fault towards John O'Groats wetland beyond which the fault extends offshore near the mouth of Milford Sound. Cochran et al (2017) looked at sediment evidence from John O'Groats wetland near Milford Sound and Hokuri Creek, 20km north of where they found a record of 22 major quakes over a 7000-year period and calculated a mean recurrence interval of 291 plus/minus 23 years. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2017.02.026
