Weathering and alteration of ancient hot-spring rocks

Microprobe element maps showing the distribution of mercury and iron in a weathered and altered rock from an old mercury mine at Puhipuhi. Cinnabar is absent. Mercury is sparsely distributed throughout the rock absorbed on to brown iron oxides. This mercury can be released into adjacent streams during further weathering.
