Suicide prevention and support

Suicide is a major issue that is of real concern to New Zealand communities. Every year approximately 500 people take their own lives by suicide, affecting the lives of many others.

The Ministry of Health have put together information for whānau and friends to support someone who is in crisis or distress.

Suicide postvention

Unfortunately sometimes suicide still occurs even with good prevention strategies in place. It is vital that good support is available not only to family, whānau and friends but work colleagues also. The manager plays a vital role in providing this support. The American Association of Suicidology has produced a 10 step action plan for dealing with the aftermaths of suicide.
